A modern menswear staple with a storied past, hoodies for men have well and truly shaken their rep. Shop our pick of the best, from Arket to Gucci

The mighty hoodie has an illustrious history. First produced by Champion in the 1930s, hoodies were originally marketed to labourers working in freezing warehouses in Upstate New York, and has since become an icon thanks to Rocky Balboa and Norma Kamali, who was among the first designers to embrace the new clothing.

It wasn’t until the 1990s that the term “hoodie” was first used and then picked up negative connotations, seen to be worn mainly by criminals. Then, in 2006, David Cameron said “for some, the hoodie represents all that’s wrong about youth culture in Britain today. For me, adult society’s response to the hoodie shows how far we are from finding the long-term answers to put things right.” Meanwhile, in fashion houses, hoodies found their way onto more and more catwalks (Vetements really did it first), making the hoodie into a wardrobe mainstay.

When it comes to hoodies, it’s difficult to get one wrong. As long as it is cosy, roomy and has long sleeves (even Ryan Gosling failed to make sleeveless hoodies a thing) you’re on to a winner. That said, there are some that trump all others and we felt it our duty to dig them out for you. From sporty, streetwear essentials to high-fashion takes, here’s our pick of the best hoodies for men.

Percival x Champion's third collaborative capsule, entitled ‘Bedfellows’, is among the latest of the brand's heralded collaborative works. Where the duo's first collections centred the duality of tradition and mysticism, Bedfellows is an ode to nature. Combining Champion's high-quality sweats with Percival's whimsical embroidery, this Dandelion hoodie is not your average piece of loungewear. £119.

Recently donned by Harry Styles while on a hard-earned day off from the US leg of his show Love On Tour, this vibrant pink Pangaia hoodie is made from a breathable recycled cotton, which saves 20,000 litres of water per kilogram of regular cotton. So it seems that Mr Styles knows both what looks good, and what does good. £130.

An essential for your off-duty wardrobe, this Everlane pullover hoodie is constructed in an uber-comfortable waffle-knit that’s perfect for lounging around the house with the added bonus that it locks in heat when layered over T-shirts. In a goes-with-everything black, it’s sure to become a work-from-home essential. £55.

Fear of God Essentials caters to just about every manner of sweat and loungewear you can imagine… as long as it's in beige, brown or cream. Made from a warm fleece-back cotton-blend jersey, this hoodie sits heavily on the shoulders, finishing with a straight hem that hangs loosely from the hip for a comforting and retro-inspired fit. £90.

A go-to for great value tailoring, Reiss has placed more emphasis on loungewear than ever in recent collections, resulting in a line of laidback sweats crafted in the same way as expert suiting. This lightweight Kace hoodie has been garment-dyed for a richer, duskier hue and softer-than-ever construction, proving that your go-to loungewear needn't feel lazy. £98.

Watermelon hoodie (high). Not quite a hit song, but not undeserving of one, this ERL hoodie combines watermelon red with turquoise-green in a merging, swirling stitch. In an oversized cut, the undulating paneling of this hoodie works to highlight the label's adoration for surfing, and all things oceanic. £122. At

Trust Nike to up the sporty appeal of an already agile silhouette. Imbued with a deconstructionist feel thanks to its contrast stitching and mapped seams, this piece is primed to take you from the locker room to your local in a flash of its lightweight cotton blend. £35.97.

Putting together the perfect outfit is a sartorial house of cards… but at the top of the deck? AMI's instantly-recognisable Ami De Couer motif. Sat confidently on the chest of this knitted hoodie, look no further for your winter hero piece. £395. At

Just another hoodie? Look again. Cos' take on the classically louche silhouette eschews the typical cotton fleece for a tactile bouclé knit to bring some texture and dimension to your seasonal looks. That, and it's pretty warm, too. £79.

Something of a hero piece for the fast-rising Mancunian streetwear brand, Represent's Owner's Club hoodie is an instant grail with its slouchy, oversized fit, tightly ribbed hem and cuffs and its unique Cobrax popper hood. Crucial to its allure is its super soft feel, which renders those smarter, shirt-wearing home office days pretty much redundant. £150.

When it comes to donning a thick teddy borg hoodie, there's no time like the present… and there's no contender quite like this pick from Asos Design. Its thick fleecy construction and rich chocolate hue are offset by its colourful embroidery at the back panel to create a youthful, if slightly edgy, feel. £35.50. At

What better way to dress for pumpkin spice season than with a burnt orange hoodie? Ideal for trans-seasonal layering, Uniqlo's Dry Stretch hoodie is ultra-versatile thanks to its smooth-feeling texture and countoured design. Easily layered on post-workout, this quick-drying piece utilises Uniqlo's signature ‘DRY’ technology for effortless moisture wicking, whether you're fresh off of the treadmill… or just fresh off the tube. £34.90.

As many of us have re-familiarised ourselves with over the last year (thanks in part to Adam Driver and Lady Gaga), Gucci is a fashion house with a storied history. In celebration of Gucci's first centennial, the 'Gucci 1921 Firenze' print of this hoodie speaks to the rich foundation of not just the brand, but its signature Web and Horsebit motifs, which both sit centre stage on the piece's chest. Say it with us now: the father, the son, and the House of Gucci. £850.

If there's any singular garment that every man must own, its a decent grey hoodie. Cut in a generous fit primed for everything from post-workout lounging to streetwear styling, Arket's Heavyweight hoodie is made from an innovative blend of organic and recycled cotton. This is where everyday comfort and off-duty style collide. £89.

All about 1990s nostalgia with an edgy twist, Palm Angels' decapitated Teddy motif captures the label's energy perfectly. In a jet-black hue and boxy, comfortable fit, this hoodie has been designed with the every day in mind. Ready to go anywhere from the sofa to a casual dinner date, slip on either some jeans for a relaxed feel or a straight-legged pair of joggers for a lazy-luxurious vibe. £555. At

Keeping things simple yet impactful, this Cos hoodie is designed for all-day comfort and chilled-out styling. Balancing a fuss-free cut with a cool-toned blue hue, this piece brings the sunny disposition of a cloudless sky into your wardrobe, providing a rather delectable layer in the unpredictable weather we're having. £55.

There are few garments out there that you simply can’t go wrong with, but the grey hoodie is certainly one of them. This cosy pick from Carhartt is made from a warming cotton blend and finished with the brand’s signature logo patch at the pocket. £53.95.
