The German Township trustees are looking into building a new “hoop building” to store road salt at the West Mechanic Street township building.

The trustees discussed the project with Josh King, township road supervisor, during their Monday, Feb. 8 meeting.

The building would be similar to the salt storage building built by the village of Archbold in 2014 on East Holland Street.

Open on one side, three walls would be made of large concrete blocks. The roof structure would be built with metal arches or hoops, covered by fabric.

A flap at the closed end would allow wind to blow through.

King said he got a quote from a man in Millersburg, who would install the hoops and fabric covering for $21,850. The fabric would come with a 20-year warranty, King said.

The township would still have to purchase 150 large concrete blocks and transport them to their building site. Each block weighs about one ton.

Then the blocks would have to be stacked to form the walls.

In addition, most hoop buildings have a poured concrete floor, which could add about $12,800 to the cost.

The trustees agreed to continue to investigate.

The proposed building would be on land west of the township garage.

King said he and Jeff Aeschliman, township road maintenance worker, have used a lot of road salt recently, trying to keep township roads clear.

King said 50 tons of salt were delivered last week.

Another 100 tons was expected to be delivered yesterday,

In a related matter, Kenneth “Skip” Leupp, president of the township trustees, said he received three calls from people interested in purchasing the former township garage building and property on the northwest corner of the St. Rt. 66-St. Rt. 2-Co. Rd. E intersection.

A sale can’t take place until the hoop building is built, because the township currently stores road salt in a building on the site.

A Fulton County sheriff deputy reported on several break-ins in the township.

•Oct. 18: 1000 block Co. Rd. 21-3.

•Dec. 10: Burlington Gardens, a garage, broken into during daylight hours.

•Jan. 12: 6000 block Co. Rd. 26, barn broken into during night hours.

•Jan. 27: 3000 block Co. Rd. 26-3.

•Jan. 29: 7000 block Co. Rd. 25-2.

The deputy said it is believed the break-ins are- “bleed-over” from Williams County, which has suffered several break-ins.

The thief or thieves are mainly interested in tools and guns they can sell for drugs, the deputy said.

He recommended keeping houses and buildings locked.

The deputy also told the trustees the removal of stop signs on Co. Rd. 24 is “going splendidly.”

The trustees also discussed a complaint about a rural mailbox being knocked down by a township snow plow.

Leupp said there is no policy in place to pay for damaged mailboxes.

The trustees speculated the plow may not have hit the mailbox; instead, the recent heavy, wet snow thrown by the plow may have caused the damage.

Andy Brodbeck, a trustee, said, “We hate it when a mailbox goes down, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Should Archbold allow residents to set off consumer-grade fireworks within the village?
